Turquoise from the Sleeping Beauty mine (1114857)

The name turquoise is related to its being brought to Europe from the Eastern Mediterranean by Levantine traders, more commonly known as Turks.  It’s been highly prized for thousands of years and was used by the ancient Egyptians, Persians, Aztecs and American Indians.

The colour is, of course, turquoise, but its range varies from green and greenish blue to sky-blue shades, which may be why it is seen as the stone of hope, as it can remind one of wide-open skies.

The Aztecs mined turquoise in what is now New Mexico, and significant amounts come from Arizona, California, and Nevada in the United States.

The colour turquoise is refreshing, calming, grounding and patient.

Turquoise is considered a stone of peace that helps reduce nervousness, tension, and stress. The gem promotes empathy, sensitivity and positive thinking. It is also highly protective.
