The addition of Gyokuro to the new Pink Lotus has made this variation even airier and less sweet.

This is my favourite rose perfume, simply due to two factors: a superb batch of Rose de Mai, unlike any I’ve smelled before, and the way in which this fragrance has captured so much oxygen; it’s so airy, and the scent permeates the room with delicate pink lotus and roses, and gradually departs, leaving behind a trailing silk tail of East Indian sandalwood.

It’s a perfume to mark those truly special occasions that arise in life, and probably best suited for those in the process of falling head over heels in love.

Is Pink Lotus Gyokuro the most beautiful scent ever created? Possibly.

With simple, yet well-executed, hand-crafted natural ingredients of Rose de Mai, Pink Lotus absolute and East Indian Sandalwood, I am hard-pressed to think that there is anything lovelier than this. And then there is the Gyokuro tea. More on that later. 

As Coco Chanel famously said, “The seeming simplicity of a masterpiece is sure proof of its grace”.

One of the most frequently asked questions that I receive is, “Is this a masculine or feminine perfume? I am not one to be defined by gender limits, especially when it comes to perfume. So I am not best placed to ask. I do think, though, that although Pink Lotus uses Rose de Mai and Pink Lotus, which could be considered traditionally feminine, I wear it with gay abandon. 

Pink Lotus has long been considered a symbol of longevity and divine beauty and is associated with Lakshmi, the Hindu goddess of wealth and fortune. She is frequently depicted seated on a fully bloomed pink lotus flower. I do believe that Lakshmi would approve of this and, like me, would saturate herself with equal gay abandon. 

Gyokuro tea really makes this composition work. Gyokuro is a supremely high-quality Japanese green tea, grown in muted sunlight; it’s full of umami, a very bitter flavour, and this dense greenness opposes the florals and provides the foil to all that sweet floralcy.

Gyokuro tea was typically drunk by Emperors, Feudal Lords, and Samurai warriors before battle, as it confers a euphoric effect that creates a heightened state that is unusually deeply calm yet powerfully energised.

Teone hand-tinctured a big vat of it for this fragrance and drank it at the same time. It’s quite an incredible beverage, and it gives this perfume a dark green piquancy that prevents the florals from becoming too intense.
